Fashion develops in a circle – and so does graphic design.
Next year’s design trends will take us back a couple of decades.
Keeping up with graphic design trends is extremely important for a company’s brand to stay relevant and contemporary – and it is brilliantly familiar!
Here are five graphic design trends for 2019:
1. VIVID COLOURS: walking, more like running away from the minimalist fashion that has invaded the design world (‘typically’ hipster) in the last few years. Next year is about vivid colors – lots of them… Think 80’s.
Undeniably, globalization has had a huge influence on this trend. Bright and vivid colors are massive visual components of African and Indian culture. A play with opposite colors, primary and complementary seems to be the key for bold graphics that stand out.
2. SHORT, TO THE POINT AND CLEAR TYPOGRAPHY: the era of long, convoluted text is over. Everything you say needs to be easy and memorable – just like brand names and content. Do you remember the early 2000’s trend?
The one when you knew exactly what (mostly fake replicas) of ‘designers’ people were wearing – and not because you were into fashion- but because you had eyes.
Social media and hashtags are a huge driving force behind this second trend.
Moschino had caught on this trend early and now, all kinds of designers will incorporate it more and more.
3. FUTURISTIC PATTERNS: in the highly competitive design world, authenticity is everything. This not only counts for content but graphic design as well. Some backgrounds we have seen are real pieces of abstract art. Not just incredible to look at but easy to remember. Gradients, brightly colored patterns, abstract design, holographs, shine, shimmer, vintage sci-fi looking pieces – it is all going to be central in next year’s scene.
70’s disco anyone?
4. MORE CONTRAST WITH LIGHT AND DARK COLOUR SCHEMES – black and white are classics – so forget forgetting about them. Next year is all about those old Samsung phone themes – offering bold contrast pieces, playing with user perception. Dark and light colors together, make up for a great and clear colour scheme.
Colourful minimalism? Perhaps Twiggy would know a little bit about this game.
” Stick to no-fail classics as fashion history always repeats itself” – Iman
5. HAND DRAWN FEEL – at a point, graphic design seemed sterile and all-the-same. Some even defined it all but an art.
As a come-back, designers have been opening memory banks of many of their viewers, by designing posters and characters in sketch style. Simple, doodle and almost childlike illustrations are making seem to be the way forwards, into memory lane. And the reminiscing, cynic community is happy.
Authentic, raw and boho – 70’s Woodstock hippies, maybe? Or just every person’s past.
Ultimately, graphic design trends and fashion trends go hand in hand. Both have to follow the cycle of history because fundamentally, humans haven’t changed that much. Their inevitable repeat is proof of that.
We can’t wait for next year’s bright colours, funky gradients and abstract projects to take over our online platforms! #MoreColour
